Novel Wednesday Excerpt for March 15

Every Wednesday I shoot a little video excerpt of the novel-in-progress I’m working on.

It’s for Instagram reels, but I share it to my Facebook and heck, here on the blog!

This week the b-roll behind the words is from North Hollywood Park in (you guessed it) North Hollywood, CA which is adjacent to Valley Village, where I live.

Dear Diary:

Selections from my journal entries the week of December 12, 2022. What goes through the head of a sixty-something gay man? Read on.

Sixty-something gay blogger.

Trouble Sleeping.

Lots of trouble sleeping last night. In fact, I did the thing you’re supposed to do when you find yourself tossing and turning for more than 20 or so minutes, which is to get up and read. Which I did for half an hour, then was able to go to sleep. And you know what, I got a sleep score in the 80s, even though the duration ended up only being like 5.5 hours. It was quality time.

I really think I’m EATING TOO LATE and also that CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM at night is counter-productive. I have to remember that chocolate does contain caffeine even in very small amounts and probably enough of a stimulant to keep me awake, as is digestion of food when I’ve eaten too close to bedtime.

Trees.

Took pictures of ginkgos. Posted it to Instagram. They’re so pretty. Especially all gold in bright morning sun.

Ginkgos in my neighborhood.

Checking Travel Plans.

Checking Airbnb Mexico City:

Yes, it does have space for another guest. So I can invite Billy if he wants to come down for a few days.

I guess I should check the others for similar opportunities. I believe all three are one bedrooms, so that portends well. (note – going to Mexico again April-June 2023)

Neurotic Finance.

It seems like it’s taken forever to get to the middle of this month. And I still have a ton of money to get me through the month. It’s probably connected to the fact that I spent SO much less than usual in November, mainly due to my trip to Mexico and my spending (or lack of it) there. Not only did I not spend anywhere near what I budgeted for day-to-day, I came back with the equivalent of about $225 USD in pesos for the next trip down there in April.

Here’s the thing: if you don’t go much of anywhere and do much of anything, you will save money. I think that has a lot to do with it. It’s been cold since I got back—to me it seems colder than a usual fall or winter here. Maybe that’s because when I left it was warm summery weather, I went to a very hot place (Merida) so when I returned to somewhat seasonal temperatures here, it just seemed colder.

It was cold: blizzard in the Sierras earlier this week.

Angst and Doubt

And so I’ve been hibernating. Working out here at home, only a couple of social engagements, even AA Meetings I’m doing on zoom. (That just makes so much more sense, in a way – why drive a half hour there and back when I can do the same meeting with no commute at all?)

Interestingly, when I can’t write something or can’t figure out where to go from where I am in a story, my head tells me I’m a horrible writer who can’t write anything anyway. Even though always these roadblocks tend to dissipate with enough time and serendipity. Or, the answer will come during a hike

Blogger hiking in Palm Springs earlier this year

Also, I made this. Roasted vegetables and sweet potato in quinoa. For lunches.

Yummy and healthy.

And that was the week of December 12, 2022.

I’m Starting a Monthly Newsletter

One of the things self-published authors and other “content” creators struggle with is the constant need to feed the publicity machine. So, in addition to the usual social media outlets of Instagram, a Facebook Page, and this blog – I’m Starting a Monthly Newsletter.

One of those things where you have to opt-in and actually request it. (Here’s a link right here.)

A writer in the morning, wondering what he’ll dream up.

To (hopefully) prime that pump and quite frankly, bribe you to sign up is a free gift. (Wait, is that an oxymoron, aren’t gifts by definition, free?) In this case, it’s the original (and award-winning) screenplay of Kept, which is a yet-unmade movie I wrote about love, lust and real estate scams in Palm Springs.

This screenplay is also totally the basis for my novel Kept. So I’m hoping that if folks read the script – a fairly quick read of an hour or so — they might want to read other things I’ve written.

Ah, downtown Palm Springs, shown here at Gay Pride in 2013.

What will be in the Newsletter?

I’ll talk about current projects, novel-in-progress, that sort of thing, of course. I’ll remind readers of my books already written – Benediction, Benefits, The Forest Dark, Kept — and that salty memoir Wanderslut 1996: A Gay Road Trip Across America.

Along with that, I’ll cover any ancillary writing things like events, books I’m reading or might recommend, writers I particularly like.

Filling the Well

Additionally, I hope to elaborate on what I do to “fill the well,” that is, fill my level of life experience that a writer needs to sustain imagination. I find that’s a constant challenge for me, to go out into the world and experience all that’s there and all that’s new for me personally (especially in the ongoing, and seeming never-ending, pandemic).

Perhaps I’ll throw in a recipe or two (if Mr. Bouie can do it. . .). And of course, there will be loads of photos, maybe even a few videos if I get thusly inspired.

So I hope you’ll sign up to get this monthly missive. Promise that you won’t hear from me more often than that, unless a book launch is imminent.

“The Forest Dark” a Finalist in Foreword Reviews’ Book of the Year Awards

It’s been quite a week for “The Forest Dark”  —  I found out yesterday that the novel is a finalist in the Foreword Reviews’ Book of the Year Awards, again in the Gay/Lesbian fiction category.

So now Noah, Eden and Louie (characters from the book) add this recognition to their finalist status over at the Reader Views’ Literary Awards. [Noah would not have a comment. Eden would say “yes, it’s about time.” Louie would smile and nod, “sweet.”]

Check out the list of all the BOTYA finalists here. This is what happens next:

“In the next two months, a panel of more than one hundred librarians and booksellers will determine the winners of these prestigious awards. A celebration of the winners will take place during the American Library Association Annual Conference in Las Vegas on Friday, June 27 at 6 p.m., with awards in over sixty categories, cash prizes for the best in fiction and nonfiction, and widespread recognition.”

The Forest Dark — Outtakes

154582979_94a26fde15_zSometimes you just can’t include everything in the final, finished book. So it is with this passage — which goes into more detail about Ronnie and Noah, a relationship that still haunts me from “The Forest Dark.” There is nothing like love and lust in your 20s. This does diminish as one ages, unfortunately. But you can resurrect it in your imagination, and in your writing.

From “The Forest Dark” (left unpublished as part of the final draft of the book):

Ronnie Perkins was only the third man Noah Baldock had ever had sex with, but the two of them together tried to make up for any lack in this department. Ronnie was, in many ways, the surprise answer to all the hopes Noah had through those years when he mostly lied to himself that he was straight, and that all would be well once the right woman came along for him to love.

He was pretty sure no one saw them trade blowjobs that afternoon, out of sight but just yards away from one of Silver Lake’s major streets. When they were finished, Noah, now buzzed, grabbed Ronnie’s hand – calloused and warm, tough from his weights – for the few steps back down the alley toward the RTD stop. A little Latin girl in a frilly, bright pink skirt skipped by unexpectedly and he disengaged, the years of denial a much more powerful driver than his new-found lust.

“Turning Japanese, I think I’m turning Japanese I really think so,” Noah sang quietly, but Ronnie had already nodded off against his shoulder on the short, hot bus ride to the apartment. Later, there was enough in a Tequila bottle for almost two full shots apiece, considerably more sex and an alarm clock that rang way too soon for a Monday morning, rousing them both out of a dead sleep.

*   *   *

After a shared bowl of Wheaties, half an orange and black coffee, Noah walked Ronnie down to the express bus stop, which would take him the ten or so miles to the beach. He worked at Equipment out on Channel Road, a store that sold T-shirts, suntan oil, umbrellas and snacks. As fun as the job was hanging out at the ocean with all the cute guys and other people on vacation, Ronnie’s position didn’t pay enough for him to have wheels. He spent an enormous amount of time on the RTD.

Trebor Healey Reading at Skylight Books

Author Trebor Healey was at Skylight Books yesterday to read from both his new novels, which coincidentally have been released around the same time by different publishers. In the video above, he reads from “Faun,” which definitely sounds like a unique (and often really funny) take on teenage wasteland!

His other new novel is “A Horse Named Sorrow,”, concerning a journey, both real and metaphorical, and centering on a great love set during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the early nineties.

Can’t wait to read both!

Benediction – podcast

Jim Arnold Podcast interview about “Benediction”

I hadn’t started “A Forest Dark” when I did the interview. Now I find that I’m writing the second half of that book. It’s such a slow process for me! Still, I do believe it will be done by year’s end and I can’t wait to unleash Eden, Noah and Louie. I think (and hope) you’ll enjoy these characters as they stumble through 1984 and 2009.

Filipino press: Redbridge Books

Red Bridge Books

The Pink Morgue

I meant to do something with this when I first saw it at the end of 2010. Redbridge Books is the first Filipino-owned and operated LBGTQ publishing house, located in Manila.

Wishing Redbridge the best of luck in their endeavors!
