Why I’m Glad to Be in California, Reasons #639 and #640

Villaraigosa and Bike Path construction

GLBT Contributions to be included in Textbooks

Two reasons that I am thrilled to be a resident (and native!) of California.

Recently I saw a cnn.com story about how the Golden State Dream was not so golden anymore. Poppycock!

Case in point, two great things have just happened, both of them evidence that California is progressive, is looking toward a future that is not all about enriching the rich at the expense of everybody else, etc. So I found this heartening.

Story #1: L.A. will increase construction of bike paths and lanes. A great way to add to the existing transport options mix. Sorry, those of you who can only see cars. You will be forced to share the road, to the benefit of all, believe me. You WILL get used to it, too!

Story #2: Notable GLBT figures will have their accomplishments covered in California history books. There really is nothing remarkable about this, as it should be just a no-brainer, but, oddly in 2011, it requires legislation in our culture. I congratulate the California assembly and look forward to Governor Brown’s signature on the law.

And for the asshat legislator from San Bernardino (Tim Donnelly) who was “deeply offended by this because he is a Christian,” I’ll just say as a Californian, I’m deeply offended because of your ignorance and narrow-mindedness. Hopefully, in the next election, your constituents will see you for the pathetic knuckle-dragger that you are and send you home. Where maybe you can read something.

And about that “homosexual agenda” thing. I want to know why, if there is indeed a homosexual agenda, why I have not been invited to any (not one!) agenda-setting meetings in my 50-plus years as a homosexual? (Is it a deodorant issue?)

I’m feeling left out.

What MediCal Budget Cuts Mean To One Man

*****UPDATE OCTOBER 7, 2011: I’m sorry to report that Jim died on October 1, 2011 of respiratory failure. Please see this link for a complete obit and memorial service information. *****

This is what state budget cuts can mean on a personal level. This video, made by actor/writer/producer Jim Troesh, tells what will happen to him and other people with similar disabilities should funding be cut from the California state budget for home health caregivers.

I know Jim from an L.A. industry networking group I belong to. When someone takes the time to make something like this, it immediately translates the generic, the mundane, the numbers – into something deeply human and immediate.

I dare you to watch this and remain unaffected. If so moved, you can contact politicians at the links below to express your wishes.

L.A.-Indio rail expansion plan might actually happen (?)

Desert Sun story on L.A.-Indio rail expansion plan

This is the main story in the Desert Sun this morning. I have been waiting for this – rail expansion between Palm Springs (Indio) and Los Angeles the entire time I’ve had this place out here (almost 10 years).

It just makes so much sense. There are no good public transport options between the Coachella Valley and the L.A. Metro area. Can I tell you how much I hate that drive?

There is a Greyhound Bus, but since they eliminated the downtown Palm Springs station they’ve made it oh-so-unbelievably inconvenient – you either have to backtrack to Indio (30 miles in the wrong direction) or get yourself out to the sandy, desolate and windblown train stop to pick up the bus.

Sandy, desolate and windblown station.

Then, it stops at every little bumf*** burg between here and the city, before finally terminating at downtown L.A.’s bus station – which isn’t even adjacent or walking distance to Union Station or any other kind of subway/bus terminal, making it even more complicated, time consuming and just plain stupid.

A very senior and well known cardiologist from Los Angeles had sad that fast shipping viagra http://www.heritageihc.com/buy5785.html “Symptoms of erectile dysfunction seem no more a dreary problem. Because of our adaptations over the last million years, we are pfizer viagra australia who we are today. To fight this problem, zenegra is special medicine available which can get erection. ‘Alkem Laboratories ltd’ sildenafil viagra de pfizer is the manufacturer of this medicine. This product made of the magic Amazon berry is, among other things, an internal beauty product that is able to penetrate, nourish and protect human cells and viagra super provide the users with a younger, glowing and sexy appearance.

No thanks.

In all my dreams of simple, efficient, fast and pleasant Southern California train travel I’ve never had the mistaken impression that someone would build the train line just for me. But I can tell you, I’d be a loyal and frequent customer! I learned to navigate L.A.s’ award-winning Metro system of light rail and buses and came to realize how much cheaper and less stressful my life would become the more I used it.

The era when the conventional wisdom about mass transit in L.A. – that you were either poor, stupid – or both – to use it, is long past. I believe it’s only a matter of time before trains connect all the urban areas of Southern California from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border and inland. I’d love to see it happen while I’m still breathing.

Trip to the Integraton in Landers, CA

The Integraton

Yesterday I went on the California Men’s Gathering outing (experience) to the Integraton, in Landers, California – which is on the way to Joshua Tree, just up the road from Yucca Valley, about 45 miles from Palm Springs.

The Integraton would take more space to explain than I have the expertise or time to do, so please see the link to their website, where it’s all explained in great detail.

The experience we had was called a Sound Bath. Basically, quartz bowls are played inside the rotunda of this building, and one taking the bath lies on his/her back, letting the sounds reverberate throughout the room and into the body, where they resonate with each of the chakras. This building has amazing acoustical properties, and the location is significant as a vortex of a tremendous amount of earth energy.

We are resorting to genuine or cialis generic overnight generic medicines through online service providers. In addition it’s regarded as a natural aphrodisiac and maintains healthy immune system. levitra generika Its production in body depends on the age & the past medical record of the person. tadalafil online pharmacy https://www.unica-web.com/news_from_unica_2003.htm The herbal remedies – Musli Kaunch Shakti capsules to boost testosterone levels and maintain good health, you can use herbal medicines like ginseng. levitra uk unica-web.com

The story goes that George Van Tassel, who built the place in the 1950s, was visited by extraterrestrials who consulted on the design and intended for this place to be a haven for humans who needed to de-stress. I’m certainly all for that, and count myself in the group that should be de-stressed.

I found the experience to be interesting. The guide explained that because of the unusual gravitational energies surrounding this area, some people feel lighter in this place, and some feel heavier. During the experience, I felt it was like an extended Savasana pose (corpse pose) that we end yoga class with. I felt myself get extremely heavy, to where I could not move my limbs, as if I was sinking into the floor and becoming a part of it.

My mind would drift to dream-like imagery and topics, including a dream I think I had the night before, so it was a continuation. Then I would come back into my body, remember where I was, remember what these strange sounds (and not unpleasant sounds) were. Much like a meditation experience, that part of it.

Someone fell asleep and was snoring softly during this time (it takes about a half hour). So obviously, different folks have different reactions. In all, I’d have to say another cool slice from a very interesting area.

This odd purple bed was just sitting there in the desert.
