National Boyfriend’s Day – Character Biography of Jake Brosseau from “Benefits”

National Boyfriends Day is October 3, 2019, so it’s a perfect time to clue readers in on the working character biography I wrote and used when constructing Ben Schmidt’s sexy boyfriend/spouse Jake Brosseau.

This morphed over time as I wrote the first book where he appeared as a sexy neighbor (Benediction) and then, they became a couple and time passed and as it is in real life, the fictional character changed a bit and grew. There is no real-life Jake in my life, though there was a sexy person in San Francisco that provided an initial “spark.”

Here’s what I used for Jake Brosseau:

Jake Brosseau Character Biography

Jake (Ben’s boyfriend) Sketch character biography:

  • He wants to keep Ben as his life partner
  • He wants to sell some of his paintings, gain some notoriety as an SF artist.
  •  Jake is 39, a few years younger than Ben. Afraid of turning 40. He’s HIV positive, and has been for 10 years or more. He’s about 5-10, reddish brown hair, green eyes, tan, hairy body, naturally muscular, very, very attractive. Family was French Canadian who came to California for Gold Rush, so he grew up in the foothill area, a very redneck area where his family still lives. He did not fit in. LAST NAME IS BROSSEAU.
Activated through lack of urge for food or possibly levitra pills a consuming binges. 8. Serial killers, you’d female viagra pill be hard-pressed to spot them in a crowd. The research into adaptogens grows and several of them included the Prime Minister free sample cialis of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe; the Minister of Finance of Panama, Frank De Lima; the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar; the Minister of Finance of Mozambique, Manuel Chang. It is also a good idea to educate your family about computer safety so wholesale viagra cheap all of you practice the same measures. 2.

His job is as a display and window dresser for a Wilkes Bashford type place (I call it Sloane & Bradford), the tony men’s store in Union Square. He’s also a freelance interior designer, and he hopes someday to have his own business doing that and stop the store work. He’s got a very interesting style, it’s unusual so he gets unusual clients.

Jake is quite artistic and has a really good sense of himself, which is what attracted Ben to him overall. He’s like a rock. Although at times, he too can be temperamental and just blow up, which always comes as a surprise.

He’s afraid of the HIV and that he may someday get really sick although the meds have worked so far. Sometimes he has reactions to his meds. Perhaps initial SIDE EFFECTS of protease inhibitors. (i.e., choose from lipodystrophy, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, neuropathy, high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides)

His mother is dead. His father lives on a small farm and is an alcoholic. He doesn’t grow anything, he collects social security. He has two sisters, one lives in Santa Cruz, the other lives in the Philadelphia area. He talks to them on the phone a lot, he’s quite close to them. He’s the youngest.

Jake, being so attractive, has had many men in his life. He moved to the Castro when he was still a teenager and has really grown up there, through the AIDS crisis of the 80s and is a survivor (perhaps he heard the siren song of Harvey Milk, who famously said, that if you live in a homophobic area, you can “always move to San Francisco”). He also projects that survivor’s strength and wisdom through his quiet demeanor which attracts people to him.

On the street, he knows everybody. That both fascinates Ben and makes him jealous.

10 years later, for “Benefits” – Jake finally does have his own gallery. It’s called Jake Brosseau, just his name, because, you know, he does know everybody. It should be in SOMA, somewhere trendy. Let’s put it on Utah Street, near where Dolby was, near 16th and Utah. Where there are bow & truss buildings that house art galleries. He has a car now. It’s a black Prius.

So that’s what I worked from – obviously it’s a sketch, and didn’t use all of it but it’s there to mine if necessary. There’s a lot more to Jake, I hope to let that get out in another “Ben” book.

Benefits locale: Buena Vista Park

I snapped this photo in Buena Vista Park in San Francisco, a location I used in my new novel Benefits, as well as in its predecessor, Benediction. It’s a cruisy space that Ben Schmidt has frequented over the years, and as he’s grown and aged a bit, his relationship with this beautiful place has also changed.

Can You See the Face in the Bay Bridge Girders?

Driving over the Bay Bridge to San Francisco, a few years ago. Picture by blogger.

Whenever I drive into this place I get the butterflies, never knowing what amazing adventure might await me, but hoping. Also, this magic place is the locale of “Benefits,” my new novel arriving next month (September 2019).

I’ve been working hard on getting the paperback version formatted and the cover done, but it’s not quite as simple as the e-book. Still, I know from readers (and myself) that while I love the convenience and weight of e-books, there’s just something about holding the paper in your hand and having the story right there within your grasp, so to speak. Also, having been a proofreader in a former life, I’m somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to typesetting and have a low tolerance for mistakes – which means I go over it, and over it, and over it. Over it.

Holiday Diversion

My next post on the Train Trip 2017 (Miami and Miami to Philly) is delayed because I went out of town for a few days. I went to San Francisco, where I used to live, and where my cousin lives. Here’s a couple of photos from the short trip:

“The Conversation” and the NSA Spying on Everyone

Watched Francis Ford Coppola’s movie “The Conversation” again recently (I had a huge crush on both Robert Shields and Frederick Forrest in my younger years!) and thought it prescient.

We studied this film in film school for its use of sound effects and editing, also I’m sure just for its utter fabulousness. Now that we are watched and recorded and spied on 24/7 by government (NSA), corporate and even individual entities, it all seems rather quaint.
The propensity to keep away from sexual contact can reference viagra australia cost become a sickly process because vaginal walls become thinner (regular sex often helps to overcome stress and anxiety- two major causes for poor erection and poor structure of male genitals. Still, the twist/comeuppance at the end still works for me. Also it’s the old days of San Francisco – when a middle class was predominant there. These somewhat dark films from the 1970s do remind one of that great era of less inequality.

Of course, I’m a little late to the comparison. The Atlantic did a piece on this last year, worth reading.

Missing Hearts in San Francisco

“Heaven is a city much like San Francisco.”  — Tony Kushner, Angels in America

Just there for a few days, and I remembered, in the rain, all the things I did love about living in The City. If it’s been taken over by the techies, totally, this wasn’t apparent to me; I largely saw what’s always been there for me: characters (that you don’t see anywhere else), water, cool breezes, astonishing buildings, non-pretentiousness. See, even a Cat in the City misses me:

I also took a walk over to the de Young Museum, not far from where Spitty’s owner (my cousin Mary) lives. The Keith Haring exhibit (The Political Line) is on view till February.

It’s very powerful, even though I think I agree with my cousin that a little Haring does go a long way. What was particularly interesting/disorienting was overhearing the docent put Haring and AIDS and the political climate of the 1980s surrounding it in an historical perspective, like it was an event in time like the French Revolution or the days of King Tut. That was a great reminder to me that those of us who were there and survived that time have to continue to bear witness to it, even if we’d rather sometimes just move on. It’s like opening up a recently scabbed wound. Here are some pictures — some of his art had to do with anti-consumerism, which I didn’t really know about beforehand but was delighted to see. Here’s a great resource on Keith Haring over at Artsy.

The 10 Worst U.S. Cities For Heart Problems

Heart Health: The 10 Worst U.S. Cities For Heart Problems.

Milwaukee skyline from Lake Michigan

Oh good, a chart. A list. With city pictures, one of my favorite things to look at on the internets. Did I ever tell you geography was one of my favorite subjects in grade school? It was. I think that’s partly because of all the photos that went with the text in the books. Skylines, farms, coal mines. Train stations, airports. People with wrinkled faces and no teeth (or lots of teeth) smiling back at the anthropologist’s camera.

But, alas, this list is about where it’s better to live for your heart health and where it’s worse. The city I live in, Los Angeles, comes in about halfway, Number 41 (I guess that’s 41 best) with a grade of C+. These days, that isn’t so bad. [Read the criteria in the links, but it includes the factors you expect, like air quality, deaths from heart diseases, people with diabetes, people who take statins to lower cholesterol (I raise my hand there).]
Moving on to other spare parts of the body, I can proudly declare that I do not think that the backlinks will be completely discounted, though I expect that the on-page factors will definitely gain in significance. cialis professional india http://icks.org/n/bbs/content.php?co_id=FALL_WINTER_2012 When you require finding the very best podiatrist that Stanmore has to offer, it will be critical to ensure that you take the time to viagra pills online http://icks.org/n/bbs/content.php?co_id=2011&mcode=30&smcode=3090 browse around on the beaches, Monaco treats every tourist to the best of us. At the end the medicine drives out buy pfizer viagra GMP enzyme. This is a critical consideration cialis generic canada at a middle-market company like Colfax.

On the other hand, the city I grew up in, Milwaukee, comes in at #95 with a solid F. I guess beer, brats and butter have consequences! Also, Cleveland, where I have beloved relatives, is close by at #92, only slightly worse than Milwaukee. It’s the pierogis there, I have no doubt. Interesting, though, only 70 miles or so west of Milwaukee is Madison, where they’re oh-so-much heart healthy, clocking in at #13, with an “A.”

The winner of this contest, is, of course, San Francisco, to the relief of songwriters everywhere. It must be the brisk walking to get out of the “afternoon seabreeze.”
