Jaunt to Cabot’s Museum in Desert Hot Springs

Over the weekend, I went with friend Roger F. and the local California Men’s Gathering group to Cabot’s Pueblo Museum at the edge of Desert Hot Springs.

Cabot Yerxa was an adventurer, a pioneer, a homesteader and an obvious non-conformist. (He was also a member of the extended blueblood Cabot Lodge family.)

He built this house of found and local materials – everything from stone and adobe to railroad ties, driftwood, ruins from other homes, broken glass. It’s intricate and fascinating. They say he was not a fan of symmetry, but I found his intricate dwelling to be symmetric in its own peculiar way.

Cabot was also the person who, when looking for water to just survive the desert, came across the hot springs. Actually, he found both the cold water he needed to drink and the hot water from the springs in this same hill, which is where he built this replica of an Indian Pueblo, which does look like a version of the Taos Pueblo – though much smaller.

Here’s some exterior pictures for you to enjoy. They didn’t let us photograph inside, but it’s well worth the visit should you go. My favorite part of the interior was the upper level apartment he built for his wife, Portia, which included all the comforts of what a lady from the city would need out in the desert – which, at that time, was still in the middle of nowhere. Less that today.

Whitewater Canyon Preserve Hike

Had a great time yesterday up at Whitewater Canyon with the Desert Cities group of CMG (California Men’s Gathering). I’d never been up to the end of the canyon road before and had no idea the Bighorn Sheep were there and I saw them, for the first time! (see pix)

King of the Hill

The literature says there’s also bears there though we didn’t see any (at least of the kind that make their home there). The hills are covered in green, so unlike the desert for most of the year – so I was very much in Von Trapp family mode, daydreaming that we were being led by Julie Andrews over the alps to the safety of Switzerland, away from the evil Nazis (though if Rolf wants to join us, we’d let him…).

Anyway, I digress. I love the landscape shots, especially the ones with Mount San Jacinto (snowy peak) in the background. I’m going to try and resize some of these to use as the banner image on the blog. A great morning with the guys and thanks again to Alan for setting it all up!

Trip to the Integraton in Landers, CA

The Integraton

Yesterday I went on the California Men’s Gathering outing (experience) to the Integraton, in Landers, California – which is on the way to Joshua Tree, just up the road from Yucca Valley, about 45 miles from Palm Springs.

The Integraton would take more space to explain than I have the expertise or time to do, so please see the link to their website, where it’s all explained in great detail.

The experience we had was called a Sound Bath. Basically, quartz bowls are played inside the rotunda of this building, and one taking the bath lies on his/her back, letting the sounds reverberate throughout the room and into the body, where they resonate with each of the chakras. This building has amazing acoustical properties, and the location is significant as a vortex of a tremendous amount of earth energy.

The story goes that George Van Tassel, who built the place in the 1950s, was visited by extraterrestrials who consulted on the design and intended for this place to be a haven for humans who needed to de-stress. I’m certainly all for that, and count myself in the group that should be de-stressed.

I found the experience to be interesting. The guide explained that because of the unusual gravitational energies surrounding this area, some people feel lighter in this place, and some feel heavier. During the experience, I felt it was like an extended Savasana pose (corpse pose) that we end yoga class with. I felt myself get extremely heavy, to where I could not move my limbs, as if I was sinking into the floor and becoming a part of it.

My mind would drift to dream-like imagery and topics, including a dream I think I had the night before, so it was a continuation. Then I would come back into my body, remember where I was, remember what these strange sounds (and not unpleasant sounds) were. Much like a meditation experience, that part of it.

Someone fell asleep and was snoring softly during this time (it takes about a half hour). So obviously, different folks have different reactions. In all, I’d have to say another cool slice from a very interesting area.
