I really liked this post on Daily Kos today, about the benefits of the European Social Democrat safety nets, in countries like Germany and the UK, France, the Nordic countries – and even places where I wouldn’t have guessed, like Brazil and Saudi Arabia!

I think the more we pursue the failed strategies of the 20th Century, vis a vis the consumerist culture, the nostalgic but lying pioneer “every man for himself” ethos, the more the U.S. will sink behind the rest of the reasonable world and continue down this path of being really a second-rate kind of place to live.

The way things have turned out is so deeply depressing – we have much work to do. I remember when I was a kid in grade school, we were told we’d have so much leisure time as adults we wouldn’t know what to do with it, because our economy produced so much people would no longer have to work very much at all. Well… that dream came true in large part for Europe, where they used those gains to benefit the society. In America, we decided to worship consumption instead, a gaping maw that’s never satisfied.

We have much work to do.
