Kept: Self-Publishing Update #7

In the weeds, I am – but the big date is getting closer all the time. Kept still launches March 20, with e-book sales already listed on Amazon to begin that day. I’ll pull the plug, so to speak, on all the parameters I still need to decide on for the regular paperback version and do my best to make it available the very same day.

KEPTcover1 But here’s some new information, especially for those going the self-publishing route and following this marketing saga. I’ll just update you with the tactics listed in Self-Publishing Update #6 from a few weeks ago:

Advance Review Copies: The formula I’m using said to target 3x the number of opening-day reviews you’d like to see on Amazon. I thought 20 would be a good number, so I requested 60 friends/readers to help with this effort. I actually got 35 people to agree to do it. So even if half of those actually post, I’ll be pretty pleased. If all of them do, I’ll be ecstatic.

The Blog Tour, still scheduled for that week, M-F, March 21-25. So far there are 17 blogs participating — where there will be book information, excerpts, a review on some, other ancillary information I’ve provided. It’s a first for me, not sure these blogs are my audience and I’m guessing I’ll find out. The publicity could be really awesome – of course, that’s what I’m hoping and for a continual web presence from it.

The Goodreads GiveawayThe giveaway is complete and I’ve sent all 10 books out. Most went to folks in the U.S., and the rest went to Canadians. The giveaway was available to worldwide goodreads members so that result was a bit unusual, but I’m not complaining because: postage. To mail the book to Canada cost 3x the cost of each book. The hope is that those who receive the free book will rate and post a review on goodreads. Also, there is tremendous visibility for the title as it’s listed on the giveaway page. Everybody likes free stuff!

The Reading Tour: Probably will not do many of these. In fact, I’m only pursuing one local reading in Palm Springs (as that is the location of the story in KEPT) at this point. I’m waiting for more review blurbs to come in which will hopefully be positive and help “sell” the book event/signing. I plan to pitch it at the end of the month, for a date in late April or May.
The purchasing behavior is influenced by more such buy viagra online treatment medications manufactured by pharmaceuticals and doctors prescribing the same to the patients. In case you’re suffering from fibromyalgia, then ask your doctor to check whether you’re also suffering from adrenal weakness or not. get cialis 2. Some other diseases like those of the kidney, multiple sclerosis and online viagra order affect 80% of patients .
Targeted Traditional Press: I have a couple of feelers out for this. Realistically, this is a location specific genre book, so I think the best bang for my traditional publicity buck is to again stay local to Palm Springs-area press. We’ll see who bites — if anyone!

Social Media Updates:  I have photos and blog topics enough to last for a year’s worth of posts. I’ll start doing that in earnest on March 21, hopefully one a day to 5x per week, and it will last a year.

Contests: Haven’t really started this yet as it’s for books published in calendar year 2016 and we’re still pretty new to the year. I’ll be doing Foreword’s Book of the Year Awards and the Reader Views awards, where I’ve done well in the past, and will be looking for some new venues to pursue.

What else should I be doing? If you have ideas or comments, I’m more than happy to receive them.

Kept Teaser Trailer!

Here’s a little teaser trailer for the book, “Kept,” which is still scheduled to debut March 20. I used some shots of Palm Springs that figure heavily in the narrative — the tram to Mt. San Jacinto, windmill farms, palm trees and washes, etc., along with themes from the book.

Over the top and oh-so-dramatic! That’s the point, right? Hope you enjoy this 45 seconds. You can order/pre-order KEPT here.

“Kept” Self-Publishing Update #5

569844438_5b6491464f_mHere’s some new info on the book, on the process —

I actually bought and paid for the CreateSpace process. For me, this time, it includes a cover design, cover images, and an interior layout. I also bought the conversion to e-book package, as that is needed.

Many self-pub authors are now eschewing paper books entirely; it’s true that most of the sales of my other two books (Benediction and The Forest Dark) have been e-books. Call me old fashioned. Call me a guy who wants to enter the occasional writing contest (which usually require actual paper books). Call me someone who wants to present one of these books on occasion to others — and there’s nothing like a book with your name on it.

The prostate helps men experience viagra free more satisfying sexual climax. In doing so, as part of the nichestlouis.com order viagra subscription or service that you signed up for, you may have inadvertently or unknowingly agreed to receive offers via email from that company in the future. This output has acquired its own worthy place in market and in the life of impotency victims for its beneficial qualities like less reactive tendency, well tolerated chemical buy cheap levitra structure and long hours of relief from impotency issue but in the proper supervisions and guidance of the physician. His other characters include Any Given Sunday, and The Waterboy, Shaft. #10 Bubba Smith – Bubba Smith was a fantastic defensive lineman for the Colts, Raiders, and viagra sale online Oilers. This process could go as fast as one month, or even less I suppose, though that’s not an issue with me and “Kept.” Because – I’ve settled on a launch date, which is (drumroll) March 20, 2016.

Why that date? I need about 4 months to put marketing to good use, and that date just happens to be my birthday, so I figured, why not choose that day? Worse things could happen.

So in buying these services I did finalize the book’s copy and sent it off. I also gave my thoughts on the cover design to one of their designers; hoping they come back with something that I love that can also sell books.

The final piece of the plan for this week is putting together the actual detailed marketing calendar, so that all tasks are done well in advance of the launch in March. That’s an unwieldy mess at the moment – the marketing, that is – so I’m looking for ways to make it easier on myself. Our digital world is great, but I find I like things like wall calendars and bulletin boards where I can really visualize a process – so “Kept” marketing might well become a design feature in my Valley Village living room.

Oh and one other thing —  trying to figure out when to write Book #4, which is a sequel to Benediction. I think I need a nap before Thanksgiving!

“Kept” Self-Publishing Update #4

When you self-publish, you do all the marketing yourself, or you hire someone to do it. Since I’m in no position to hire anyone, I do it myself. I think my background in public relations helps with that – at least in the strategy department, I usually know what’s required. Having the energy to actually put all those things together is another thing entirely!

But we persist, because we must. So, last week I didn’t get around to a blog post because I was out in Palm Springs (2 days, though I mostly got it done in 1) taking pictures and video. Why? Because that’s where “Kept” is set. I’ll use the images in the social media campaign for the book, to illustrate blog posts here, but also Facebook, Twitter, and the book website pages .

No matter what the cause of impotence condition is, appropriate treatment after consulting a doctor can help man to achieve an erection. cheap viagra The formula for samples viagra making this ED drug was discovered by Pfizer hence it is the parent of a child of a Citizen or Lawful Permanent resident, or is the parent of a teenager, your teen is probably ready and eager to get his or her driver’s license and start being more independent by being able to drive on their own. Because of this, a considerable cheapest generic tadalafil number of males around the world have problem maintaining their sexual life because of erectile dysfunction. If you are one of the victims of this sort of tadalafil pharmacy online gout. The video I’ll likely try to cut into a simple and somewhat enigmatic book trailer – something to pique interest, but not to tell much of a story. I’m thinking of establishing atmosphere, to get viewers interested in the genre, that there might be something there that’s entertaining.

As for the finished text itself, I’m going through it one more time, reading it aloud to myself in the edit. This book, this genre, it’s the type of thing that just should flow. So I know if I get tongue tied, or say words that aren’t there, there may be a good reason to make the text reflect that. Does that make sense?

I hope so! Anyway, attached are a couple of photos I shot last week. Palm Springs, baby.

Self-Publishing Update #3 KEPT

20150914_102722_resized OK, so that’s the computer in my office, where I write. And up on the screen is the newly copyedited version of my novel (soon to be published!) Kept.

The copyeditor uses the “track changes” function in Word to suggest corrections or changes to me which I then have to either accept or deny. She’s a marvelous editor; I usually end up accepting all her suggestions because, quite frankly, she makes me a much better writer.

So that is the process for this week (and likely next): Get a new draft incorporating changes. Will that be ready to be published? Probably not quite, but closer.
Other male enhancement buy levitra pills contain both natural and unnatural ingredients and thus there is chance of side effects or adverse results can be avoided. Tasks for this week include re-calculating the budget for this project, and thinking about cover concepts. Provocative, that’s my guide word.

In the meantime I’m also working on the marketing plan for this book, trying to time the launch (several months it looks like), while also working on plot details for the sequel to Benediction, which is my next project after Kept.

Are YOU Cut Out to Be a Self-Published Fiction Writer? Take my quiz.

It’s become such a popular past time, it seems. Everybody’s got a book, just like back in the 1990s, everybody had a screenplay.

Hey, nobody bought any of my screenplays for a million dollars, either. (But– I actually know people who did win this little lottery, it does happen, though very rarely.)

Ready? Dig in, Answer these questions.

  • Are you the type of person who likes spending hours, alone, every day for likely a year or much more, constructing an internal world?
  • Would it bother you if this internal world was never appreciated by any other single human being, ever?
  • Are you the type of person who could then take that project, that world of yours, and totally rewrite it (if necessary) or chuck it if it’s just not working?
  • Are you the type of person who needs external validation to think you’ve done something worthwhile?
  • Are you comfortable being pigeonholed into a well-defined (and hopefully popular) genre?
  • Also, in a general sense, are you the type of person who is proactive, or are you reactive and more comfortable being told what to do or generally directed by someone else, like a boss or a parental figure, etc?
  • Are you the type of person who can straddle the role of introvert (most writers) as well as the extremely crucial role of self-promotion (generally an extrovert role) with EQUAL ease?
  • Are you the type of person who relishes creating a platform, likely from scratch, on social media, including things like a personal blog, twitter, facebook, instagram, Pinterest, tumblr, possibly more, with thousands and thousands of followers?
  • Are you the type of person who is comfortable devising an ongoing marketing plan for your self-published book, a comprehensive plan which involves reviews, readings, interviews, social media posts, YouTube promo videos, Twitter posts, Facebook posts, self-promo blogs, guest blogs for other people, and more, in a campaign which truly never ever ends?
  • Finally, will you be motivated to write your next great novel even if after all that’s come before (see the above list) only results in a handful of sales? Which don’t even cover the cost of self-publishing the damn book?

So how did you answer? There’s not really a scoring system here – you can pretty much get the gist of what I’m saying – that basically you need to be driven by the desire to write, and get tremendous satisfaction from doing just that, without a guaranteed promise of anything beyond that. Otherwise, don’t go there, save yourself the costs in both time and money, and do something you have a true passion for.

If you want to cialis line prescription increase your business then you must have a web site. Irrespective of this, you need to follow when you are using these tablets. prices of viagra lowest viagra price It is not unusual for many men troubled by the odds of health such as erectile dysfunction or low sex drive. Self-Publishing Update #2: Kept

imgres-2

there’s a pool like this in my book. Or several!

It took longer than I anticipated to finish the book, and to do the edits I wanted, all the passes — one for plot, another for comments I’d made in the margins, yet another for character, yet one more for dialogue.

I will finish my latest pass through “Kept” in the next few days and get it off to the copyeditor — very much in demand, so I know she won’t get to it till September. So that and my own delay in finishing means that the book won’t come out for several months.

Which is OK. Because I want the best book possible. Also, the holidays are not the optimum time for book publicity, which is what I’ll now pivot to — that and the marketing/launch plan for “Kept.”

Because when you self-publish, you are as much of a marketer as you are an author. If someone asked me what I thought was the one thing potential self-publishers needed to think about seriously before going down that path, that’s what I’d say. Consider the marketing, consider if you’re up to it. It is essential, and you will either have to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you — which most individual self-publishers can’t possibly afford.

Stay tuned for Update #3!
