Tell Me a Story: The Naked Novelist

Always searching, always looking to uncover another (or any) effective way of promoting my novel via social media.

So, I’ve generally neglected YouTube so far, and at my own peril. Well, not any more. I thought, there are tons of shirtless men on YouTube (usually of the younger and hotter variety) and I know they get tons and tons of views. So I got to thinking, what if I read my book, a page a day, on camera, naked (well, you can use your imagination), and posted it to YouTube?

Would it help get awareness for my new book, The Forest Dark? Would it help sales? Is it just juvenile and ridiculous to think people would want to see a 50+ naked guy reading on YouTube? I really don’t know. But I do know this – it’s easy to track. I can find out since the video view counter is there for the world to see.

The first reason behind it is the human hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT.) What do you think? (oh, and my camera angles, delivery and lighting will only get better, I promise. There’s 246 pages to get it right.)

Gay Bar Rejection!

Oh yes. I got a kick out of this, even if I am a little late for Valentine’s Day! I do suppose the experience of rejection is similar no matter what one’s orientation might be, but I, of course, am more familiar with the gay brand of rejection.

Sadly, this doesn’t happen much anymore because I don’t have enough energy go out much anymore! But if I did… also don’t drink and don’t smoke, though I did enjoy Robbie Joe Banfitch’s tutorial vicariously – it’s true, imbibing and smoking something does dull this pain of rejection.

From where I sit at 50+, it’s hard to believe somebody who looks like Robbie gets rejected much at all – so if it happens to him, is there any hope for the rest of us? They might as well tack up a sign over the door which reads “Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here.”

Oh, and Robbie Joe: 1) Welcome to East Hollywood, and 2) that shirt really wasn’t too tight. In fact, just leave the shirt off altogether. If you want.

If not, there’s always the kitty. Or the dog. Or the other kitty.

The Very Strange Story of the Vanishing Hitchhiker

The Very Strange Story of the Vanishing Hitchhiker

It’s a great day in Palm Springs because my friend (Dennis) Tracy Quinn has, at long last, launched the website and music video for his new musical, The Very Strange Story of the Vanishing Hitchhiker!

Years in the works, with Tracy writing the book and the late Bill Parsley writing the music, Vanishing Hitchhiker takes an unfortunate busload of wintry tourists through a succession of urban legends, each one more bizarre than the next. Will these people ever get to their destination, or are they bound to suffer the same dastardly fate as so many urban legend victims?

Only time will tell. Check out the site and the catchy song “The Story of Maria Goretti“, which is now up on YouTube as well:

What could be better than a guitar-playing nun in drag, killer marionettes, and stage blood? Screams, I tell you. Well, it all seemed to work pretty nicely for Debbie Reynolds.

Next stop, Broadway!

Purple is as purple does

As I was contemplating moving back into Los Angeles, for some reason I thought of this lady, who I used to see all the time walking around, a vision in purple hues.

A few clicks later I found that someone (thanks, Gregg Archambault!) had made a little movie about Edna, the lady who wears purple. I believe, or at least it looks like, this was shot at the corner of my old place there (at Clayton and Rosalia Road).

Anyway, enjoy the stylings of Edna, and my hat’s off to you, for this unique fashion treat. I don’t like eggplant either.

A Tour Of Abandoned Detroit Neighborhoods

I’m reading Richard Florida’s “The Great Reset,” which is his take on how economic upheavals (like the one we’re going through) lead to a huge change in how capitalism works – what and how things are consumed, where and how people live, etc. Hence, a “re-set.”

He spent a good deal of time discussing Detroit, a great city which rose out of a Long Depression in the 19th century, and the perils that can and do befall localities too heavily dependent on one industry. He directed readers to YouTube to see videos of Detroit’s Urban Decay.

This is one of the videos I found. There are more – some compilations of hauntingly beautiful stills of abandoned theaters, train stations and factories; others, like this one, a drive-by compilation of desolation set to music.

I’ve read about this decay for years but have never been to Detroit. I’ve also never seen video like this. If nothing else, it was the enormity of the area and what must have been the human toll there – neighborhoods shattered, families uprooted and displaced, nature finally taking over everything once the rest is gone (urban prairie – complete with raccoons, pheasant and a real-life beaver).
