I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
~ Joyce Kilmer
The HOA decided that this mesquite tree (which I planted about four years ago) in my yard was just too damn big for the space (true) and would have to go. The gardeners came on Friday to get rid of it.
I loved this mesquite tree – home of various desert birds, including the little hummingbirds. I will miss its shade, and the glorious whoosh sound it made when the wind blew through its feathery branches.

I’m sure we’ll replace it with something smaller, but it just won’t be the same.
This is so sad such a beauty. I planted my little Mesquite last spring in a 1/2 wine barrel and because of the ground critters undermining that corner of my hill, I had a friend transplant it closer in from the hill. I wasn’t out there watching, she left more then half of the tap and root system in the tub!!!! it didn’t take long before all the leaves started dropping, I was shocked and sooo sad! But the guys at Ace helped me out and it came back, so far so good. I am looking for another one but have problems finding them in my area, East of San Diego, this one is very similar to the Arizona Mesquite and I don’t think it has much of a thorn, at least not yet. I like the bark color of yours very much, mine is much more dark-black brown with light green leaflets.
Hope your next tree gives you and the critters a good home too.
Yes, they planted a Japanese oleander, which is much smaller, but I hope (some) birds like it. I’ll take a picture and post it.
Best of luck with your mesquite! They are such lovely trees – Jim
